Flanders Electric

Challenge

Improving employee engagement and creating a leadership culture.

Case Study

Flanders Electric was founded as a motor repair shop in 1947.  For nearly six decades, Flanders has expanded to become a Midwestern symbol of providing motor fabrication and services for major industries in the U.S. and across the world.  In 2009, Flanders approached us with the goal of creating a better leadership culture in the midst of the economic decline.  After engaging in a company-wide survey, the leadership challenges suspected by Flanders leadership were confirmed.

Flanders faced four main challenges:

  • Lack of communication
  • Employees wanted to know the vision, strategic goals, and action plans
  • Employees felt discouraged and not appreciated
  • Teamwork needed to improve

Solution

Based on the findings, we developed an intentional leadership plan targeting the entire organization and focusing on four key solutions:

  • Creating a common language among all employees
  • Providing training solutions and ongoing resources
  • Engaging in one-on-one coaching for top leaders
  • Investing in leadership development programs for employees, including a monthly mentoring lesson from John C. Maxwell

Results

After these key solutions were implemented, a re-assessment confirmed dramatic improvement. Ongoing leadership development programs are in place to create a stronger leadership culture, and the company continues evaluating metrics to determine employee needs.

Flanders is focused on creating an environment that enables leaders at all levels in the organization to make a stronger impact. Flanders firmly believes leadership development is key to their industry success.
