John Maxwell on Leadership

What Were Your Key Takeaways from L2: Learn-Lead?

Just two weeks ago, I had the privilege of participating in The John Maxwell Company’s first ever L2:Learn-Lead Simulcast. And it was a great experience! Of course, I enjoyed delivering my lesson on the ideas in my new book, Good Leaders Ask Great Questions. But I also took away some amazing insights listening to our two other speakers, Linda Kaplan Thaler and Tim Sanders.

Linda, the CEO of Publicis Kaplan Thaler, a very successful advertising agency in New York, shared about the importance of GRIT - Guts, Resilience, Initiative and Tenacity. She showed how they are essential to success as an individual. I especially loved her thoughts on mastering the little things. She used the illustration of the emphasis in the military on making your bed – because if you can learn to do something small almost perfectly, you can learn to succeed in the bigger areas of life.

Tim, whom you might know from his bestselling book a few years ago, Love Is the Killer App, motivated everyone with his energy and passion for people-centric tools for success. My favorite statement of his for the day was “Chicken Little must fry!” (on confronting the naysayers in your life).

In my session, I talked about how I capture key takeaways from events like this one using the acronym ACT. A is for Apply. I write it in the margin next to any notes that I plan to apply immediately to my life. C is for Change. What do I need to change? I write a C next to that item in my notes. And finally, T is for Teach. I write a T next to anything in my notes that I need or want to teach to someone else. Then I evaluate everything afterward and schedule the action steps that I want to take.

Close to 40,000 people in 28 different countries joined us for the high-energy half-day experience of L2. And if you were one of them, I would love to hear from you here. What lessons stood out to you? What did you immediately apply? What do you need to change or teach? How has your leadership improved as a result of L2? Please share in the comment section below.

If you weren’t able to join us this year, the comments from those who did will hopefully inspire and instruct you. I think it would be wonderful to see even greater impact after the event.

And I hope you’ll join us next year. The event has been scheduled for October 9, 2015. If you want to receive updates on this and other events and resources from The John Maxwell Company, sign up here. They’ll let you know more about attending and/or hosting L2 next year.

Remember to comment with your key takeaways from the simulcast – or with what you’ve learned from other commenters! Through interaction, you can continue to stimulate growth in each other.
